SUCCESS....! "Mont Reve" Distribution Deal, which began at The Vegas Cine Fest 2011.....

While at the fabulous Vegas Cine Fest this past summer presenting our short film, Mont Reve, we attended a distribution panel featuring, among other key Hollywood players, Page Ostrow of Ostrow and Company. Once we completed our feature version of Mont Reve in September, we submitted to Page right away, confident not only in the film but also in our VCF connection. We were honored and thrilled when Page took us on as clients and even more excited when, within 3 months, she had secured us a worldwide distribution deal with top distributors, Entertainment 7. Programming for the Film Festival 2012. Who are the Programmers this year. There are 3 of us. One of them is me (Maria).

What do the Programmer do, they choose the films that will screen during the Film Festival. Films that fit the Festival's needs for that year. The programmers go t o Screenings, meet Producers, Filmmakers, Directors, like talent Scouts would. They also visit other Events.

I personally like to build a good rapport and great working relationship for future Years to come. I have met many great Filmmakers the past couple years, and they are like family. I always look out for their next Projects.

Our Submissions are an other great source of interesting projects, and some of them make it to our selected screenings.

So, if you see one of us at your Screening, Event or even on your Production Set, remember, we're always on the "LOOK OUT"...!

Tolga Katas produced and promoted several multi-platinum artists through his record labels Futura and Summit Entertainment, and contributed significantly to the sales of over 50 million records. He won the BMI Song of the Year Award for Sending All My Love and was nominated for the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Tolga is credited with being one of the first pioneering producers to create a hit song entirely on the computer using digital music production technology. Katas produced the 90′s boy band sensation Linear, Stevie B, MTS, and more.

With the onset of MTV, music soon led Katas into the world of video production, television and network development in the early 80′s. An Adult can make an Impact in a Child's Memory, can also destroy a DREAM....Philip shares HIS TRUE LIFE Story about his own experience....

During a long Hot Summer in Paris, MY Mother scanned through the Parisien News in hopes to find some activities for her 2 bored sons. We were just kids. My Mother found a Casting Call for a "Court Metrage"(Short Film) to be filmed during the Summer.
TO make a Long Story Short, we went to the Audition. They asked me to Cry, I couldn't Cry "on command". That was the end of my Acting Career. Then it was my Brother's turn ~ we could hear him Crying, and he kept Crying. He came out of the Room still Crying. Geez.

A week later, we got a call. My Brother got "The PART". I ended up as an Extra. My Mother told us we would have to be on the set all the time. The Film was called "Le Bateau" ~ a Small Row Boat. I cannot remember what the Story was about, BUT....

The one thing that I vividly remember is all the cinema equipment and my focus zoned in on that huge beautiful and mysterious “Camera”

Not having anything in particular to do on the set, I started to hang around and observe the the camera and the guy behind it..

One day that “Guy” behind the camera noticed I was observing him, pointing towards me and called me over.

As I walked over to the “Guy” behind the Camera, he smiled and asked me if I wanted to help him...

I think this may have been the first day of my cinema career..!

I got to know the “Guy” behind the camera. His name was Claude Renoir, Son of famed Film Director Jean Renoir, and grand son of famed impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir !

I will Never forget Claude Renoir, as he impacted my Life as such a Very young age. Respect Kids, it will Impact their future.

Basic Do's & Don'ts of the Production Process....

I didn't even consider myself a Filmmaker until much later ~ My 1st Production ever was Producing a Union Commercial, I had used SAG Union Actors, therefore it was a Actual Union Set. I must have been about very early 20's at the time. Great experience, so I did not start off in the Indie Circles. I have at least 10 credits that should be listed on IMDB, but then it would Date me if I posted them all. =) ( and, Yep they are ALL Union). And, Yep When everyone thinks you are a Producer on a Union Project, your phone rings a lot, and you become very Popular quickly, especially Casting Directors & Agents...Oh then I figured it out ~ I was the one that could actually get them some pay.

Later I found the differences quite interesting. In a Union Production, it is much easier to Produce. With a Indie Project, which usually means a limited budget can be challenging.

I think one the Best jobs I enjoyed was working with MTV. I worked with the Line Producer & Supervising Producers for Productions in Hawaii & Mark Burnett Productions as a Production Coordinator.

Wow, I never understood What Indie Filmmaking was, until I actually wrote, starred, produced a short film. Of course, I was the ONLY one with some Union Card on the Set. I think the Average Cost for a Short Indie Film usually runs to $5000 budget, if you feed everyone, and you know how to really cut costs. It's NOT that difficult. I never met anyone that ever said NO to either get Free grub, Get Credit, and maybe Network, afterall, it always sounds good when you say, I was working on a Movie/Film, yaddah yaddah yaddah.....blah blah blah blah. You get it.

So, I put together of what I think is Important on Any Production.

I will do my best to complete each question, I may have to refer back to it later to really break it down for you.

Basic Do's and Don'ts of the Production process....

1.The differences in Crew Positions , why it's Important to be a Team Player instead of a ME -Player.

Get a Production Manual, know them all & observe. I obviously been through both Union & Indie Projects. That is what I do. Observe. First and foremost you have to know your Crew, and treat them with respect. Knowing them by names is good, otherwise Hey is just as good.

2. Why Production & Festival Rules are to be followed.

Rules. Whether you make the personal Choice to follow them or not, it can either promote or demote you, and sometimes destroy a career. I've seen people on Big Productions get fired & escorted off a set. People can smell a troublemaker. Yes, there is such thing as Black list, I think it's wise not to turn people off, especially if their ranking is above yours.

Festivals. Rules are NOT meant to be Broken. It would be unfair for contestants that have tried to win too..

3. Rules with working with Kids on the Set:

When there are kids on the set, treat kids with Respect.

Maria ~ I personally worked with Kids because I was a Medical Assistant for a Pediatrician, once for a Private Practice, and a Clinic. I was a floater as a Med. Assistant actually working with a RN, and administered those painful injections to little kids, and some of these Kids are suddenly extremely Stronger when they see that needle coming. I know Kids need to feel wanted and appreciated. And if you do not know them personally and they do NOT know you, I suggest never raising your voice to a child, unless it is your neice, nephew, cousin. BUt , having a complete Stranger telling and not asking nicely, telling you where to go, what to do, can be stressful to a child.

(SEE NOTE).

4. What makes a Good Director & What makes a Average Director.

Watch their Work. See how they are on the Set. Do they know what they are doing, are they getting the best from their Actors. I studied Acting. I took Acting Classes, and I am a member of SAG Union, I have been a member for over 20 yrs. So, I know when & what or when upon meeting a Director if we have a good rapport. Does the Director know his Camera's, Shots, does he know how to handle the Set overall. Again. Observe.

5. What exactly does the 1st AD do? Does a 1st AD have ANY Creative Control?

AD has No Creative Say or Creative Control whatsoever.

6. Why everyone wants to be on IMDB. What is IMDB (Internet Movie DataBase).

I know people that just want to GET their name on IMDB. I hear it all the time, and they will do as many short films as they can to try to move up in their rankings and have some bragging rights. They want to get CREDIT for Literally EVERYTHING, and I mean everything they can fill up on that list. it's the truth, am I wrong?

7. Why is "listening" to Peers IMPORTANT.

Listening is good. Heard of the expression, Silence is Golden? Listen well.

8. When being "Too Demanding" can be a Downfall.

Sometimes it's called being "Arrogant", maybe "Rude", or just a Know it all. No one wants to be on a Set where someone thinks they have the Power to make certain decisions and the World is owed to them. They make others feeling uneasy. I never say anything. I observe. I listen.

9. Why Respect on ANY Set is important.

Again, I go back to Observe. Listen. Feel the Vibe of the Set.

10. Why Leave your Ego at Home.

Why Not. All I ever hear from others is always ~ I did..., I was.. I am...I think...they are probably broke and will ask you for their next gig. NEXT.

My 1st Indie ~ the Script was written in 2 hours. Prepped in a week. We were shooting before the Month was over. And it actually Screened.

Overall, a Production is a fairly simple process, especially a Indie (You are the Creator). Get a Script. A Camera. Have your friends & family work on it ~ you'll get them for FREE. Learn how to Edit ~ E'viola. Simple. My Dermatologist used I Movie to make some of his Video's. Wow. He really did a great job. Should he add, Writer, Director, Producer, Exec. Producer, Actor, Editor to his Credit....maybe. =)

As a new filmmaker, I was unsure with what I was exactly getting involved with while submitting to film festivals. I had heard good things about the Vegas Cine Fest in passing, and sort of submitted off a hunch. This was the first film festival our film “Z” was accepted in, and in turn became the world premier for both our film and myself as a filmmaker. I will say bluntly that I would have had it no other way. Great atmosphere, great people involved, really friendly staff and personnel, and I was able to develop a personal relationship with all of the co-founders as well as honored guests (which is apparently not a typical film fest experience!) I had an incredible amount of fun at all of the events, the scheduling made it easy to see all of the other quality films, and there was still plenty of time to have that traditional Vegas experience. A real fantastic production from top to bottom, and even if I have no film to submit I will be in attendance next year for sure! Just too fun to pass up.

I entered "Vegas Cine Fest" this year with my Movie, "Don't Call Me a Hero". Philip and Maria kept me informed every step of the way and quickly answered all my questions.
