Spotlight on VCF Board Member Page Ostrow ~ Ostrow & Company Q&A .........
Page Ostrow & John Landis at "Vegas Cine Fest" 2011 ~
VCF: Why should a Producer consider a Producer's Rep?
Page Ostrow:
1. We work for/with the filmmaker(s) and the film to get the best
deal possible from the most platforms that can garner income.
However, we never outright own the film. The filmmaker always retains
ownership of their film and makes all the final decisions.
2. We track and collect for the life of the film and we have enough
leverage with distributors to do this.
3. We work with the filmmaker to get the best, most appealing package
to sell the film - from the synopsis to the logline to the poster and
the website.
VCF: Do you have Distributors that you have often dealt with on a
regular basis?
Page Ostrow:
Yes, most of the distributors deal with us on a regular basis and Page
knows Presidents and VP's of the networks and distributors personally
(Page often has lunch with them).
VCF: What kind of strategy do you use to promote a film?
Page Ostrow:
1. Once a filmmaker retains us, we will schedule a strategy session
with one of our distribution execs. This is to work out a marketing
plan in order to give the most enticing package to the distributors.
2. We will create a list of all the distributors to send the film out
to. This list can be added to by the filmmaker of any distributor we
missed.
3. Our distribution team will then begin to send out screeners to
each distributor.
4. We will gather feedback from each distributor and will add this to
our distribution reports to indicate responses to the client.
5. Any offers received will immediately be presented to the client
and they will make the final decision on how to proceed.
VCF: Is your submissions online open to anyone?
Page Ostrow:
Yes, anyone with a film longer than 30 minutes (no shorts), any genre
and any budget can qualify. We work with scripts that need financing,
films that need finishing funds and completed films that need
distribution.
VCF: How many film festivals do you attend a year?
Page Ostrow:
We attend numerous festivals throughout the year. We have a team of
scouts that attend all major festivals in all 50 states.
VCF:
How many films do you accept on the average?
Page Ostrow:
We have numerous films entering our office daily and we have an
intensive screening process looking at each and every film.
VCF: Do you Rep Producers also from other Countries?
Page Ostrow:
Yes we rep filmmakers from all over the world and are able to garner
distribution for films in all countries.
VCF: How long does it take to get a film noticed or picked
up by a distributor?
Page Ostrow:
The period of time between signing the contract and selling the film
to the distributor can vary depending on the film, time of the year,
buzz generated from the package. Sometimes it could happen within a
few weeks, other times it could be in a few months.
VCF: What are some of the challenges you face when you rep a Producer,
and should a Producer expect from you?
Page Ostrow:
1. A challenge would be a filmmaker who has extremely high
expectations. We need to bring them back down to earth regarding
their project.
2. A filmmaker who is frequently unavailable or unwilling to respond
to us or take our calls. This can affect deals that need to be closed
via a strict deadline.
3. A filmmaker that is unable or unwilling to deliver a film
according to the specifications of the distributor.
A producer should expect to be willing to work with us in a timely and
transparent fashion (as we work with them) and be available when ready
to close. Also, the filmmaker should be able to deliver their film
per the distributor's agreement.
VCF: What is the Key to Success in this Industry?
Page Ostrow:
For the filmmaker to be willing to work with us and trust that we have
the contacts and experience to get them the best deal possible.
